About

At Terra Cotta Community Centre, we are dedicated stewards of a cherished historic space, nurturing its legacy while fostering a vibrant community. Through programs in education, arts, fitness, and culture, we aim to enrich lives, inspire connection, and create a welcoming space for gatherings and celebrations. Our mission is to honour Terra Cotta’s past as we build a resilient, inclusive, and engaged future for all.

Early Years

The Terra Cotta Community Hall was constructed in 1862 as a Wesleyan Methodist Church, with labour provided by the local congregation. Following the union of the Methodist and Presbyterian churches into the United Church of Canada in 1925, the building ceased to be used for regular Sunday services. The building did, however, continue to be used as a Sunday school and for occasional church services, and gradually evolved into use as a community hall maintained by a group of Terra Cotta residents. Formal ownership to the group of trustees was granted by the United Church of Canada in 1992 and the building became designated as a heritage property.

Renovations

After becoming a heritage building the hall received a grant to upgrade its cedar shingle roof in 1992. Unfortunately, other aspects of the building were not weathering well and in the early 2000’s the board of directors began fundraising for the reconstruction of this charming but dilapidated hall. In May 2005 the Terra Cotta Community Centre became a non-profit corporation and by May of 2010 the board of directors had finally gathered together all the permits, approvals and fund raised enough to start a full reconstruction of the hall.

Today

Our community centre is a historic landmark managed by a board of directors made up of Terra Cotta Locals. The hall requires constant maintenance to preserve its beauty and functionality. We rely on donations from generous individuals and corporate sponsors to keep it running and to continue hosting events for the community. Additionally, our space is available for rentals for small private events, providing a unique and charming atmosphere for any occasion. Your support is greatly appreciated in helping us maintain this important community space.
